I know how you feel about Africa. I think once you've had a personal taste of war and the way it affects people it's hard to look at news articles with the luxury of distance that you once could. Not that distance is necessarily a good thing. It certainly doesn't breed pro-activeness!
There are positive things happening in Africa though. When I was in Uganda in 2003 we frequently had "mamba" tanks driving though our village heading to the north to fight the Lords Resistance Army. It was disturbing that until I went to Africa I knew nothing about this 20 year war going on between a group of rebels (LRA) led by Joseph Kony and the Ugandan people. It's a brutal war involving abduction of Ugandan children for child soldiers, rape of young girls, terrible torture of innocent people. The worst part is that Kony is fighting this war because he wants to rule Uganda based on the 10 Commandments. I think he knows a different 10 from me! It's become a political and religious war too. Sudan allow the rebels to cross their borders for protection because their Muslim government is in support of the LRA's work - basically persicuting Christian Uganda. I just couldn't understand why the International Community had done nothing about these attrocities. We seem more than happy to jump into Iraq at the first sign of trouble (we've done it twice in the last 15 years!) yet this has been ongoing for 2 decades and the average punter has never heard anything about it. I guess their is no oil in Uganda (!)
Well, anyway, this is all changing. The UN recently put Joseph Kony on their most wanted list. Their has been a ceasefire in the north of Uganda between the LRA and the Ugandan government's soldiers(UPDF) - it even seems to be holding. Now there are talks about giving the LRA commanders a fair trail! It's amazing. What a turn around in 3 years. It all seems to have come through the International Community recognising what is happening out their. I can really see God moving in that place!
Sorry, for some reason it wont let me publish the full link - add this bit onto the end of what i published in the last comment and it should work. This is a really interesting site - worth a look
